The State of Climate Change Adaptation in the Great Lakes Region
Overview
The Great Lakes region is composed of two Canadian provinces—Ontario and Quebec—as well as eight U.S. states—Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The region provides 21% of the world’s freshwater supply and 84% of North America’s surface freshwater supply (www.epa.gov/greatlakes). Climate change will have severe effects on the natural resources and human communities in the region; practitioners will be required to prepare for and respond to these impacts through mitigation and adaptation measures.
Objectives
To survey, catalog, and assess (where possible) climate adaptation activities in the Great Lakes region, especially focusing on freshwater-related efforts in the natural and built environments.
