Sea Level Rise in Puget Sound
Resources
Below is a compilation of tools and resources for understanding climate change and sea level rise in the Puget Sound region:
Visualizing sea level rise projections in Puget Sound and beyond:
- University of Washington: Interactive Sea Level Rise Data Visualizations
- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Sea Level Rise Viewer
- Both this and the UW viewer are publicly accessible viewers that you can use to model what sea level rise is likely to look like; the NOAA viewer allows you to visualize this as a map overlay
- Sea Level Rise and Coastal Flooding Frequency - This research paper evaluates over 200 tidal guage stations around the coast of the U.S., and based on flood frequency data and climate projections, estimates a doubling of the frequency of coastal flooding for most of the coastal U.S. every 5 years. By 2100, the authors conclude, today's "once in a lifetime" coastal flood may be exceeded every day during the highest tide at over 90% of sites considered in their analysis.
