The State of Adaptation in the United States: An Overview is a synthesis report funded by the MacArthur Foundation and undertaken by EcoAdapt, the Climate Impacts Group at the University of Washington, the Georgetown Climate Center at Georgetown University, and the University of California-Davis and provides examples of societal responses to climate change in our planning and management of cities, agriculture and natural resources. These examples include regulatory measures, management strategies and information sharing.

Local non-profit, Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper, has been working with Freshwater Future and EcoAdapt to help position the Region to address and adapt to potential climate change impacts. During a workshop in May 2012, Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper learned ways to incorporate adaptation into their programs but using the newly developed Great Lakes Climate Change Adaptation Toolkit.

Climate change is making it harder to achieve management and planning objectives as it changes the playing field and adds additional hurdles. Developing an approach to overcome the challenges of climate change is something most of us have not been trained to do. To help improve mangement and planning outcomes in the face of climate change, EcoAdapt created a resource, the Climate Adaptation Starter Kit, to help orient those new to what is known in the field as "adaptation".

We are pleased to let you know about a new report, Monitoring Climate Change in Temperate Marine Ecosystems: A test case using California's Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), which outlines a new and innovative framework for measuring climate change effects and informing adaptive MPA management.
The report provides a scalable approach to monitoting, which give managers a suite of measurement options that can effectively track climate change impacts and provide 'alerting signals' for California's marine ecosystems.
Real world examples—Practical advice.
To develop a better understanding of climate adaptation efforts in North America and offer a
centralized source of information, EcoAdapt recently completed a comprehensive, 18 month
survey of coastal and marine areas in North America (United States, Canada and Mexico) and
released a report entitled “The State of Marine and Coastal Adaptation in North America: A
Synthesis of Emerging Ideas.” This report summarizes climate impacts and provides
summaries and examples of adaptation actions implemented throughout the United States,
Canada, and Mexico.
